The problem lies in your self-image embedded in your subconscious mind. The good news is that you can change it. Here is a simple technique to reprogram your subconscious mind to eliminate any bad habit and replace it with a new and better action. We will start with an excerpt from the preface (written by Tom) of our new book The TurboCharged Mind: Eliminating Bad Habits with Hypnosis.
“When I was younger, I smoked cigarettes. I knew quitting was a logical and reasonable decision because a high incidence of cancer ran in my family with cigarette smoking being the common thread. Yet, in spite of this very conscious knowledge, along with desire and what I thought was strong “will-power”, I did quit often, for short periods of time, only to start smoking again. This pattern continued for quite longer than one might reasonably expect. Apparently, I would soon forget the “reasons” I wanted to quit and would ultimately resume the habit. When I began to read about the workings of the subconscious mind, I started to understand that I had a firmly entrenched and stored self-image of a smoker. I had internalized various messages that were conflicting, yet nonetheless created a wholly unconscious and detrimental imprint in my mind. By learning to incorporate a simple method to “re-program” my self-image from a smoker to a non-smoker, change came quickly and I never relapsed into smoking and more remarkably, never missed a cigarette. Over the years, I have taught the technique to many people and they all kicked the habit with the same ease and permanency. I have often used the simple method to change other habits as well for the better and have always been amazed with the results.”
This technique is very simple and can be started immediately upon finishing this post. Before the explaining how to do it, a short summary of why it works will be helpful. This topic is covered in detail in the The TurboCharged Mind.
Your habits, both good and bad, are rooted deeply in your subconscious mind which is responsible for automating many bodily functions along with many physical and mental actions. Directions from your subconscious mind will almost always override your will-power (no matter how strong it might be). If you want to quit smoking or lose weight or change any other behavior, you consciously know you want to change. Your conscious mind is where you process your thoughts; it is your logical mind. If you know you want to quit smoking or lose your excess body fat and you really want to, why is it that you continue to smoke or reach for that chocolate covered donut?
The reason is because your self-image, stored deep in your subconscious mind, is that of a smoker or un-healthy person. It is your subconscious mind that is behind that little voice telling you that you must have that cigarette or donut NOW! Over the years we have had many pleasant experiences associated with smoking and eating and these experiences have helped form and solidify our self-image.
In order to change, we need to change our self-image. There are many effective methods for accomplishing this, hypnosis being one of the most effective. The following method, which we have named STOP! Has worked for many people and can be use by itself or in conjunction with hypnosis which will virtually guarantee success.
We will use smoking as our example but the process is the same for any habit or behavior you wish to change.
1) Resolve that you really want to change and make a list of all the reasons why. The more you come up with the better.
2) At the first thought of temptation, like wanting to smoke a cigarette, say the word STOP! You can say it to yourself or out loud if no one is around.
3) At the same time, either snap your fingers or give yourself a pinch. The side of your hand under your thumb works well.
4) Right after you do these two things, tell yourself, “I am a non-smoker. I make healthy choices.” You can repeat this several times.
These actions are designed to give you conscious control of the situation and to plant a new seed in your subconscious mind, which will eventually form a new and improved self-image. These steps will almost always be enough to move past that particular urge. Repeat more than once or add additional affirmations that will reinforce your resolve.
In the beginning, these urges may appear frequently and often minutes apart. Continue to follow the 4 steps each time to get you past the urge. It does take some resolve and will-power to remain diligent and consistent. The first day will be the most challenging. You may need to use the steps 100 times or more! However, the good news is that each subsequent day, the frequency of the urges will slowly decrease as the message sinks into your subconscious mind and a new and improved self-image is formed.
There will come a time when you no longer have the urges at all. However, because of the various triggers you have stored which are associated with any habit; a “rogue” urge can surface at any time for a period of time. These instances might take you by surprise if you are not prepared. All you will need to do is perform the 4 steps. By this time, the urge will pass very quickly and that particular trigger will most likely be gone forever.
If it sounds too simple, that is because it is very simple. However, genius often lies in simplicity and we can assure you that this technique is extremely effective. Give it an honest try and see for yourself. When used along with a directed self-hypnosis download from the TurboCharged Mind series, the results will be nothing short of amazing!
