A Link Between Modern Technology and Obesity?

According to a new study from independent economic think tank group, The Milken Institute, there is a direct link between the adoption of modern technology and the rate of obesity.  The increased time in front of TV’s, computers, video games and more processed foods is taking a toll on our health.  Technology is looking more like a double-edged sword.

The group came to this conclusion after reviewing statistics of 27 countries from 1988 to 2009.  They compared the level of investment and communication technology (ICT) for each of the countries and their obesity rates and found that every 10% increase in ICT resulted in a 1.4% increase in the country’s obesity rate.

Out of the estimated 500 million obese adults in the world, the United States has the greatest percentage (34%) followed by our neighbor to the south Mexico (30%), New Zealand (26%), Australia (25%) and our neighbor to the north Canada (24%).
Obesity can lead to chronic disease and disability and is considered the 5th leading cause of death worldwide all by itself.  About 12% of current annual medical costs are related to obesity and this number is rising.
